Summaries
A good summary should:
1. give the overall
intention or gist of a passage
2. pick out the most
important points of the
argument or narrative
3. show how the
subordinates (i.e. minor or not
so important) points
fit in with the passage
4. separate examples and
opinions from the
facts
5. where directed, extract
particular items from
the original;
6. be set out in a
clear-cut manner
7. be written in simple,
clear, precise English
with no ambiguities
(i.e. unintended
meanings)
